BLUE JAYS FALL TO WESTCONN; WHEELER SETS 50-FLY RECORD
DANBURY,
Conn., November
15, 2008 -- Saint Joseph College sophomore Sarah Wheeler (Winchendon
Springs, Mass.) swam to a school-record 29.40 seconds in the 50-butterfly
but the Blue Jays fell to Western Conn. State University, 189.50-98.50, at the
O'Neill Pool Saturday afternoon in Danbury.
Wheeler touched the wall second in the 50-fly but it was enough to break the
existing Blue Jays record of 29.55 seconds, set on Feb. 10, 2005 by Juliette
Byrnes. Wheeler was also second in the 200-Individual Medley (2:27.60) and second
in the 100-fly with a time of 1:07.40.
Colonials first-year Sondra McAdam (Redding, Conn.) made a splash in her first
collegiate swim meet by breaking two school records in the 200 and 100 individual
medley.
McAdam captured the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.10 and the 100 IM with a blistering 1:05.50 touch. She also tapped in with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.40) and was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay winning foursome that clocked in a 4:02.90.
WestConn's 200-yard medley relay team set a new record when Katie Meleg (Danbury, Conn.), Megan Dyson (Farmington, Conn), Francesca Testa (Cheshire, Conn.) and Julie Grecni (Danbury, Conn.) opened the meet with a 1:57.30 winning time.
Blue Jays sophomore Kristine Ellegard (Rocky Hill, Conn.) captured the Blue Jays only event when she cruised to a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:29.00.
Heather Bodington (Wethersfield, Conn.) earned the victory on the one-meter board with 180.75 points while Emma Tracy (Waterbury, Conn.) took the three-meter diving event with 159.60 points.
WestConn
travels to Western New England next Friday, November 21. The meet begins at
6 pm in Springfield, Mass. while the Blue Jays host Eastern Conn. State University
on Saturday (Nov. 22) at 1:00 p.m. in the Bruyette Natatorium on campus in West
Hartford.
